VERNON & CO. Souvenir, The Imperial Visit to Delhi . Calcutta: Bombay, Vernon & Co, [1912]. Oblong 2° (312 x 395mm), presentation copy to Lady Hawke of Wighill Park from Ranjitsinghi of Nawanagar, the album with 161 individual gelatin silver prints of various sizes on 112 grey heavy card mounts, including a panorama of the Coronation Durbar on 5 sections, the larger prints mounted mostly one-per-page, others mounted in various patterns, each page with embossed motif at upper right corner and with printed tissue interleaves bearing titles and the Vernon & Co. imprint. (Two panorama sheets detached.) Original green calf gilt, the covers elaborately bordered in gilt, the upper cover with title and 3 armorial stamps, the lower cover with central floral arabesque, gilt turn-ins. , lettered and decorated in gilt (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance : From the Property of the Estate of the late Dowager Lady Hawke. A fascinating record of the Coronation Durbar and the tour made by King George V and Queen Mary to Dehli in 1912. This copy was given to Lady Hawke, the wife of The Hon. Martin Bladen Hawke, the 7th Baron (1883-1910) at Christmas, 1912, by Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar (1872-1933), one of the foremost cricket batsmen in England. Ranjitsinhji, as Maharaja and famous international cricketer, played his part in the Dehli celebrations, and this album, including as it does a photographic portrait of the great man, was probably one of a few copies commissioned from Vernon & Co. for presentation to his friend, to celebrate the Durbar. Ranjitsinhji moved easily between India and Britain, kept a house on the Thames in Middlesex and was very much part of the international set. As a cricketer he was was the first Indian to win a Cambridge blue, in 1893, and appeared in four Test series against Australia, playing at his best between 1899 and 1904. He left England in 1904, returning to India, but did play in County cricket in 1912. His inscription on the flyleaf reads, ' The Lady Hawke Wighill Park with best new year wishes from Martin's sincere friend Ranjitsinghi of Nawanagar xmas 1912.' The Hon. Martin Bladen Hawke captained England in five cricket Test Series.
