Beschreibung:

Albumen print, 6 x 8 in. on a 6.5 x 9 in. mount. No photographer's imprint, and verso with only a later pencil inscription reading "I think this is at Andover" and a accompanied by a note stating the image was purchased in Andover, Massachusetts. The large building visible behind the playing clearly matches photographs of Phillips Andover's (Old) Main Building, built in 1865 and burned in 1899. While baseball player and team photographs from the 1870s are scarce but obtainable, in-game action photographs are exceedingly rare, especially in this size. Player's can be seen mid-sprint halfway to first and third base, there is a cloud of dust to the first base side of the pitcher, who appears to be lunging or running toward third, and the home plate umpire is captured jogging out from behind home plate to get a better look. A crowd of several hundred stretches well into the outfield along both baselines, and several carriages of fans are visible in the foreground.
