Veuve-Clicquot, La Grande Dame--Vintage 1989
5 bottles per lot
Veuve-Cliquot Veuve-Clicquot is amongst the most internationally recognized and respected of Champagnes. The history of the house is closely intertwined with that of the evolution of sparkling wine, as many strides towards perfecting the quality of sparkling wine were first discovered at Veuve-Clicquot. Since the 18th century its reputation has been flawless, producing small quantities from only the most exceptional years in order to portray the greatest characteristics of the vintage. Often presenting notes of dough and bread true to the pinot noir grape, the wines are rich and expressive and structured for years of ageing, which is well represented by the '89, '90 and '96 vintages. Cuvée La Grande Dame is named after the famed widow Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin who is credited with raising the quality level of Veuve-Clicquot to a grand marque . First launched in 1977 to celebrate the firm's bicentenary, the champagne received immediate prestige and every vintage produced continues to rival the region's top cuvées . A blend of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, the Grande Dame is produced exclusively from the eight grand cru vineyards originally owned by the woman herself. On the palette it remains true to its namesake as one of the richest, powerful, and yet elegant and feminine cuvées in the world. Veuve-Clicquot, La Grande Dame--Vintage 1989 Reims Parcel: lots 746-747 "Floral, lime blossom but tinny nose; dry, hard and distinctly acidic. Needs time (tasted blind, January 1997). The following year, preceding a marvelous dinner at Ch Mouton-Rothschild, opening up with excellent flavour and, from memory, more rounded than the '88. And a further year on, preceding Hal' Lewis' Bacchus Installation dinner just noting good colour, weight and flavour. Last tasted, with caviar and other distractions, in Memphis Tennessee, Sept 1999 **** A thoroughly satisfactory champagne with another 10 years of active life. MB, Vintage Wine 5 bottles per lot
