VIRGINIA] A complete collection of all the lavvs of Virginia now in force. Carefully copied from the assembly records. To which is annexed an alphabetical table . London: printed by T.J. for J.P. and are to be sold by Tho[mas]. Mercer, [1684-the date from Wing]. 19th century half calf, marbled sides, in a modern clamshell case. 11 x 7 inches (28 x 18 cm); [6], 148, 145-300, [22] (all as per ESTC), collating [pi]^(2) (lacking [pi 1, blank?], [A]-Z 2A-2P^(2) 2P^(2) (repeating pagination, but different laws) 2Q-3P^(2) 3Q^(4) 3S-4G^(2) ^(2)A-F^(2) [-F2, blank]; followed by 24 ff. manuscript addenda of later laws etc., and 18 ff. blank. Boards detached, worn. The first two leaves detached from the binding, clipped in the lower right corner away from text, a clean tear extending into the gutter margin on the third leaf, scattered toning throughout, with contemporary annotations (occasionally trimmed, as are portions of the ms. addition at the rear); these may be in the hand of Robert Ruffin, who signed the title and appended a date of March 10, 1687/8; the title also bears the name of a New Orleans owner, John Maretain, dated [18]52. Edited by John Purvis, this is a rare London edition of the Virginia laws. Laid in at the rear is the original invoice from the Rosenbach Company, dated 1931. Tower 904; ESTC R222342.
