Leiden, 1743. 2 parts in one vol., 8vo, 203 x 123 mm., contemporary calf. FIRST EDITION. The first Virginian flora, based on collections made by John Clayton at the beginning of the 18th century. The first part of this work was published in 1739, and copies are known with the first title bearing that date. The second part appeared in 1743, at which time a cancel title was issued for the first part, the sheets of which were reissued, not reprinted. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 2189 -- FORSTER, JOHANN REINHOLD. Flora Americae Septentrionalis; or a Catalogue of the Plants of North America. London, 1771. 8vo, 202 x 130 mm., modern quarter calf, spine worn. FIRST EDITION. In the preface to this work Forster says his purpose is "to give to the English reader a short enumertion of American plants with English names" and to supplement Gronovius Flora Virginica.
