De Maximus et Minimus Geometrica Divinatio In Quintum Conicorum Apollonii Pergaei Adhuc Desideratum. Florence: Giuseppe Cocchini, 1659. 2 works in one volume, folio (308 x 220 mm). 165 leaves, title in red and black with woodcut arms of Ferdinand II (de Medici), 2 engraved (on one folding sheet) and 2 woodcut plates, numerous woodcut diagrams in text. 19th century calf-backed mottled paper boards, spine titled and ruled in gilt, repaired tear to margin of first 4 leaves, scattered foxing, shelfwear. FIRST EDITION of Viviani's attempt to reconstruct the lost fifth book of Apollonius of Perga's Conics . Viviani solves the problem posed by Fermat to Toricelli, who went on to pose it to Viviani, consisting of the search for a point in the plane of a triangle such that the sum of the distances from the vertices shall be the minimum.
