Beschreibung:

VOIGTMANN, Caspar. Neues Artillerie Buch . [Gotha, 1680-83] 2° (318 X 190mm.) MANUSCRIPT on paper, 2 parts in one volume, 111 leaves including 12 large folding plates mostly on 3 sheets, 45 coloured and 7 other mostly full-page illustrations (7 leaves blank), original calf over paper boards, dated 1683 with author's initials, silk ties (skilfully rebacked). A remarkable work on artillery, various types of cannons, rockets and ammunition. The author was 'Zeughauss Verwalter und Oberfeuerwercker zu Gotha auf dem fürstl. Hause Friedenstein', i.e. responsible for armoury and fireworks at the princely court of Friedenstein in Gotha. The title to the second part dealing with howitzers and mortars states that the author wrote the manuscript himself. There are, however, small sections in a different hand. It is dedicated to Philipp Duke of Saxony (1654-90). The very fine plates, mostly in watercolour, comprise 4 full-page ink-and-wash cartouches, numerous illustrations of guns and cannon and their fabrication, some in detailed section, demonstrations of their use in battle (5 plates) and of the use of rockets and grenades. Lightly browned, but in fine condition and bound for the author. On verso of title an old stamp of the library of Preussische Kriegesschule zu Berlin.
