Provenance : Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Gift of Albert C. Burrage (bookplate, dated 1934). FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED 18TH-CENTURY FRUIT BOOKS. The fine plates (with dark impressions) in a baroque style, primarily depict large scale citrus fruits above views of gardens, palaces, or villages set in a German (especially around Nuremberg), Austrian or Italian landscape. "A valuable work from these garden views alone" (Dunthorne). Most of the engraved plates are not signed. Nissen presumes that Paul Decker the younger is responsible for the majority of views in the first volume. Each volume is divided into five parts, with a total of eight parts devoted to citrus fruits, one part devoted to flowers and the fifth part of the second volume devoted to pineapples, palms and coconuts. Volckamer, a wealthy Nuremberg merchant, was one of the first to cultivate citrus fruits north of the Alps in his orangery. His garden the "Gostenhof" in the suburbs of Nuremberg is depicted on a large folding plate in the second volume and in other views.
