The 'Novellen' or articles Wagner wrote for the influential Revue et Gazette Musicale de Paris in 1841-42, together with musical hack-work also commissioned by the owner of the Revue , Maurice Schlesinger, were virtually the composer's only source of income during his stay in Paris.
