The text reads in full: "Then received from George Washington the Sum of Four pounds Virg. currcy. in part pay for carrying a load over to Red Stone for him." [ Bound in: ] BAKER, William S. (1824-1897). Character Portraits of Washington. Philadelphia: Robert M. Lindsay, 1887. 2 volumes, 4 o. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with over 100 portraits and views; and 25 autograph letters, signatures, documents, etc., including: George Washington (see above), John Quincy Adams (ALS, 1817), Jedidiah Morse, Henry Lee, John Bayard, David Ramsay, John Jay (printed document signed), Jared Sparks (ALS regarding his life of Washington), Rembrandt Peale Daniel Webster, Joel T. Headley, Washington Irving (signature), Edward Everett and George Custis. Red morocco gilt, facsimile signature of Washington stamped in gilt on front covers, top edges gilt, watered silk linings. The 26 March 1833 letter from Daniel Webster refers to his riposte to "Mr. Calhoun's 2nd speech." LIMITED EDITION, one of 350 copies. A FINE EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY.
