WASHINGTON, George. Printed document signed ("G:Washington") as Commander-in-Chief, Continental Army, countersigned by Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. (1740-1809), and Henry Marble, Adjutant, Headquarters, [New Windsor, N.Y.], 10 June 1783. 2 pages, folio, 340 x 203 mm., EDGES OF THE SHEET UNTRIMMED, neatly accomplished in manuscript, minor spotting, fold separations neatly repaired (one crossing the "a" in Washington's signature, small repairs to verso. A document frequently found in relatively poor condition. WASHINGTON GRANTS AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE to Francis Lagrosse, Soldier in the Fifth Massachusetts Regiment, who has "faithfully served the United States Six Years and Upwards." The discharge is dated the same day as Washington's famous letter to the states announcing his retirement, since the "great object," independence, had been realized at last (even though the final peace treaty had not yet been signed in Paris).
