From 17 April to 8 May 1889, New York City was host to an elaborate festival marking the centennial of George Washington's first inauguration as President in 1789. Here we have the program for that celebration, signed by the President, the Vice-president, Levi Morton, members of the Cabinet and other dignitaries (there are 47 signatures in all). As part of the celebration, the Metropolitan Opera House mounted a historical exhibition, and noted architect Stanford White created a temporary memorial arch on Fifth Avenue, presaging the permanent Washington Square Arch that White would create between 1890-1892. White also supervised the design for the cover and some of the illustrations in this program. President Harrison arrived in the City on 29 April, recreating Washington's route by sailing from Elizabethport in New Jersey to the foot of Wall Street. A parade up Broadway to 59th Street followed on 1 May. This commemorative pamphlet was prepared at the direction of a Committee on Entertainment connected with the celebration.
