Watercolor and Pen and Ink Fraktur for Elisabeth Burger (b. 1824), attributed to George Gottfried Ephraim Burger (Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1790-1861), intricately designed and drawn in red, yellow, green, blue, and black, incorporating a wide variety of floral and foliate devices, and elaborate lettering typical of the artist's work, 15 x 12 in., (minor edge losses, very minor trimming), in a modern frame. Literature: For similar examples attributed to Burger, see "Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, fraktur: an initial survey," Lynn A. Brocklebank, in The Magazine Antiques, January 1986, pp. 258-67. Note: George Burger was a German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania after 1816, and married Elisabeth Schumacher of Hempfield Township in March 1818. Elisabeth Burger, for whom this fraktur was made, was the fourth of their thirteen children. S or Z
