Watercolor ghost stories Lafcadio Hearn, c.1904-5 [HEARN, Lafcadio (1850-1904).] – KOIZUMI, Kazuo (1893-2965). A set of 20 watercolors of his father’s ghost stories from Kwaidan and insect studies, on double-sided card, signed (“O’Giglamp (Kazuo)”), c.1904-5. Twenty watercolors on card (210 x 180mm), with manuscript stories on the versos and each with a loose tissue guard, numbered consecutively 1-17 and 1-3, edges gilt, some heightened in silver and gold. Manuscript index on paper. A lovely set of watercolors by Lafcadio Hearn’s son, illustrating Hearn’s famous ghost stories. The Greek-Irish writer is best known for his books describing the legends and folktales of Japan. These charming illustrations by Hearn’s son Kazuo depict some of the most famous stories from his classic collection Kwaidan, including “Mimi-Nashi Hoichi” (Hoichi-with-No-Ears) and “Oshidori” (the Mandarin Duck). Three of the watercolors relate to Hearn’s insect writings. UVA library contains two similar sets as part of the Papers of Lafcadio Hearn. [With:] Hearn, Lafcadio. Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, and Co, 1904. Octavo in original publisher's binding. The first edition.
