Whaling—Japan 肖美鯨冥取之景. A fine Japanese hand-painted scroll depicting whales and whaling, late 18th century pen and ink, watercolour, gouache and gold leaf on fine washi (和紙) traditional Japanese hand-made paper (image area 28 x 918cm., overall 28 x 940cm. including later protective cover and title label), preserved in a modern sandalwood box with protective case and chemise, minor worming and wear with expert restoration and repaired tear in first section, modern endpaper and silk tie A VERY RARE AND FINE HAND-PAINTED JAPANESE SCROLL ON WHALES AND WHALING, OVER 9 METRES LONG.The composition of this scroll is in four parts: the first part shows two different types of fishing boats used in whale hunting; the second depicts an animated whaling scene with a whale surrounded by fourteen boats with the scene highlighted with flecks of gold; the third depicts twelve different types of whales each identified and described, and the final part details eight different types of harpoons.
