Photographic title-page with oval profile portrait (Linton engraving after G.C. Potter photograph), engraved portrait of Whitman as a young man (used as frontispiece in the 1855 Leaves ) bound in at p.28. Half dark green cloth and marbled paper boards, uncut, printed paper spine label (edges and corners a bit worn, spine label chipped). Provenance : Courtney Lemon (presentation inscription from Whitman's executor Horace Traubel). FIRST EDITION OF WHITMAN'S "DEFINITIVE" COLLECTION, one of 600 copies printed for the author's personal use. SIGNED BY WHITMAN ("Walt Whitman") at base of the printed title-page of Leaves of Grass , (without the limitation statement added in manuscript by Traubel, as in all copies sent out before February 14, 1889). INSCRIBED TWICE BY TRAUBEL. On front flyleaf Traubel writes: "Given to Courtney Lemon by me by Horace Traubel, in New York, at Harron's. April 23rd 1904...." In blank area of the title-page Whitman's executor Traubel has added: "To Courtney Lemon 1904 Horace Traubel." BAL 21431; Meyerson A2.7.m.
