William Trost Richards American, 1833-1905 Southern Coast of England, 1898 Signed Wm T Richards. and dated 98 (ll); inscribed The Shores of Conanicut, Narragansett Bay (Near Horsehead, Conanicut) and inscribed Loaned by Thomas Tew Benson on old labels affixed to the backing Oil on canvas 16 1/4 x 28 3/4 inches Provenance: Thomas Tew Benson Formerly, the subject was thought to be the Shores of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, but further research has recently shown that the site is the southern English coast. A painting possibly identical with this one belonging to Thomas Tew Benson appeared in a 1954 exhibition curated by Edith Ballinger Price, Richards' granddaughter. That work was titled Near Horsehead, referring to a site on Conanicut Island, near which Richards had a home. If the two paintings are identical, the confusion about the subject is one of long standing. C Property of a Washington, DC Collector
Wax relined. Frame rubbing. Scattered craquleure. Some scattered paint separation in the sky, with some corresponding inpaint. Inpaint in the outline and shadows of the cliffs at the center left. Some possible touches in the water. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
