William Trost Richards American, 1833-1905 Alpine Scene (The Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps) Signed Wm T. Richards and dated Phil. 1860 Oil on canvas 26 1/2 x 36 1/4 inches Provenance: Harrison Earl, 1862 (possibly) Dr. And Mrs. Llewellyn Boyd, TN, by 1973 [Sale] De Caro Auction, Odessa, DE, Oct. 8, 1988 Private Collection, MD Exhibited: Philadelphia, PA, Pennsylvia Academy of Fine Arts, 1862 Brooklyn, NY, The Brooklyn Museum, May 1973 Philadelphia, PA, Pennsylvania Acedemy of Fine Arts, Sept. - Oct. 1973 Chattanooga, TN, May - July 1985 Literature: Linda Ferber, William T. Richards: American Landscape and Marine Painter 1833 - 1905, The Brooklyn Museum, 1973, p. 63, Illust. plate 30 Linda Ferber, William T. Richards, DDS, Columbia University, Garland Publishing, New York, 1980, p. 75, illust. p. 46, fig. 50 Antiques and Arts Weekly, September 23, 1988, illust. p. 224 Note the prominence of the two glaciers in the process of carving out steep valleys; they have since substantially receded. Man's works, as illustrated by the chalet in the right foreground, are at once dwarfed by those of nature and in full harmony with it. The overall impression conveyed by the scene is one of pastorial tranquility, underscored by the artist's use of nearly pastel tones of blue and pink in the sky and mountains. C Property of a Distinguished Maryland collector
There is an area of restoration in the sky to the center left approximately 1 1 1/2 inches. There are a few other spots of careful inpainting in the sky. Relined. Craquelure.
