The results of 10 years of observations of the treatment of congestive heart failure with leaves of the foxglove ( Digitalis purpurea ). The use and dosage of the drug digitalis at the end of the 20th century has barely changed from the recommendations made by Withering. The author's great interest in botany, and his works published on the subject, led to the witticism during the long illness that finally led to his death "the flower of physicians is indeed Withering".
