The Death of General Wolfe at Quebec .
London: R. Sayer, 10 October 1786. Mezzotint, trimmed to the platemark (14x10 inches, 353x254 mm, overall). Condition: Several repaired tears, small chip in the bottom margin not affecting text. Matted. mezzotint depicting wolfe’s heroic death at the battle of quebec, a deciding moment during the french and indian war. In 1757, Wolfe was made second in command to General Jeffrey Amherst, the commander and chief in North America. He successfully captured the French fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia and was next ordered to command a military and naval expedition against the French forces at Quebec. After a three month siege of the city, Wolfe led an unexpected and successful assault, but perished during the battle. This wonderful image, showing Wolfe dying from a chest wound, is a superb example of an historical droll produced in England in the period. Wolfe’s heroic death at Quebec in 1759 was a popular theme and was reproduced in several engravings and paintings (most notably by Benjamin West .
