In 1757, Wolfe was made second in command to General Jeffrey Amherst, the commander and chief in North America. He successfully captured the French fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia and was next ordered to command a military and naval expedition against the French forces at Quebec. After a three month siege of the city, Wolfe led an unexpected and successful assault, but perished during the battle. This wonderful image, showing Wolfe dying from a chest wound, is a superb example of an historical droll produced in England in the period.
