WOODWARD, George Moutard (1760-1809). A collection of 9 pencil and watercolour caricatures, all signed and inscribed by the artist, with their corresponding hand-coloured etched plates, published by S.W. Fores, London, 1797-1803. Inscribed titles: The Surgeon's Petition or the Barbers Triumphant ; Scotch Eloquence to a Chilly Congregation ( the print with small hole and some crinkling); Savoyards of Fashion or Musical Mania of 1799 (closed tears at upper margin of the print); Tying the Garter or A Mutual Surprise , title of print altered to A Leg of Lamb ; Old Times Returned ; A Morning Surprise ; Prize Beef or Luxury in the Nineteenth Century ; Parsons in Full Scent . Average sheet size 295 x 390mm. Window-mounted and preserved in brown cloth portfolio. Provenance : William Hartmann Woodin (1868-1934; purchased at his sale, New York, 15 January 1941). ORIGINAL CARICATURES FROM THE WOODIN COLLECTION . Woodward's caricatures are heavily populated with the plump, middle-aged, rosy-cheeked characters who are his stock in trade. Old Times Returned, Prize Beef and and Parsons in Full Scent all find amusement in the English capacity for hearty eating and drinking. In Tying the Garter , a footman is so shocked to see the size of a lady's exposed calf that he lets slip the cup of tea he is dutifully bringing her .
