Zusammen mit seinem Bruder James gehörte er zu den bedeutendsten klassizistischen Architekten seiner Zeit in England. Die Brüder veröffentlichen Stiche ihrer Entwürfe ab 1773 in zwei Foliobänden. Sie beschäftigten dafür führende Graphiker, darunter G. B. Piranesi.
