Outdoor photograph of Buffalo Soldier. N.p.: n.p., [ca 1935]. 3 5/8 x 5 3/8 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount (significant creasing, particularly through center of image/mount, some loss to print, tears, corner/edge wear to mount). [With:] 3 Platoon A Co. 8 Bn. / ERTC Fort Belvoir, VA. N.p.: Fort Belvoir, VA, [ca 1940s]. 8 x 14 in. silver gelatin photograph (creasing throughout, corner/edge wear including short tear near lower left corner, some spotting). Lt. D.N. McClain stands in the front row, near center, posed with a group of African American soldiers. Fort Belvoir was home to the Engineer Replacement Training Center (ERTC), which was formally inaugurated in March 1941 during the lead-up to America’s entry into World War II. In September 1940, when conscription was reintroduced, the fort became an extensive training establishment, producing as many as 5,000 trained engineer soldiers per month.
