Worthington Whittredge American, 1820-1910 By Morelia, Mexico Inscribed Morelia and dated indistinctly ... American, 1820-1910 By Morelia, Mexico Inscribed Morelia and dated indistinctly Mar. 27 8... (lc) Oil on canvas 11 x 15 1/2 inches Provenance: The artist Frederick E. Church, a gift from the artist By descent in the family In February of 1893, Worthington Whittredge traveled to Mexico in the company of his old friend, Frederic E. Church. The latter, who had visited the country several times to relieve his rheumatism, probably invited his old friend to come along-the two had spent five years together in Italy from 1854 to 1859. While Whittredge produced a few paintings during the trip, he also created several from sketches after his return. Among them is his 1899 scene of Morelia, a city in central Mexico. Here the dome of the Morelia Cathedral can be seen above colonial structures and fortifications, while trees that have grown haphazardly over the years soften the lines of the buildings. Whittredge's handling, combining gestural spontaneity with firm control, was well suited to his subject and demonstrates the strength of his art in his late career. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
