an 8" x 10.5" typed document headed SECRET/SECRET/Supreme Headquarters/Allied Expeditionary Force/APO 757 and reading in part 1. The following personnel, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, will proceed via special military aircraft (B-17 airplane #42-6036) on or about 30 June 1944 from present station to Washington, D.C., to carry out the instructions of the Supreme Commander and, upon completion of assigned mission, return to the United Kingdom: Lt. Col. Ernest R. Lee...Miss Kay Summersby..., dated 29 June 1944. This lot includes a copy photograph of Miss Summersby and a rare WWII shoulder patch of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force. There is still quite a bit of controversy as to whether or not Ike and Miss Summersby had a sexual affair. When the United States joined the Allies after Pearl Harbor, Summersby was an MTC drivers assigned as chauffeurs to Major General Dwight Eisenhower. In Summersby's first war time memoir, Eisenhower Was My Boss, 1948, she made not mention of any affair, but after Ike's death and while she herself was dying of cancer she and ghost writer Barbara Wyden published her autobiography entitled Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1975, in which it was claimed that a brief sexual affair had occurred. Others maintain that the ghost writer and published invented the whole affair to sell books. One note of interest in support of Summersby's/Wyden's account is the fact that Summersby began the war as a British citizen with the rank of private in the British forces and ended the war as a U.S. citizen and a Captain in the U.S. Army WACs. All through the direct efforts of General Eisenhower. Condition: Document with even toning, else VG; shoulder patch EXC.
