WYNYARD, Major Edward George -- ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA 1896. An album of photographs and press cuttings, with Wynyard's initials "E.G.W." and date "Cricket 1896" in gilt on front cover, large oblong 4to, 30 leaves, including two very fine team photographs of the England and Australian teams (approx. 9¼ x 11¼in.), with cut-out portraits of the team members mounted as a montage on the two facing pages, each portrait with the player's cut-out autograph beneath, preceeded by a hand-illuminated page reading "Final Test Match, 1896 England v. Australia. Played at Kenninton Oval, August 10th, 11th, & 12th. England won by 66 runs," and a newsclipping of the match. The album also contains other large, similarly fine photographs of Wynyard's Eleven (v. RMC), C.I. Thornton's England Eleven (v. Cambridge), Yorkshire Champion County, Hants County Pavilion, 1896, and Milton Park August 26th, and another 20pp. of montage portraits accompanied by autographs, including one page devoted exclusively to W.G. Grace and another to Ranjitsinhji (Grace's autograph alone occurs 5 times). At the start of the album is an original watercolour portrait of "A Wynyard catch" (affected by rust stain), and three small original sketches of the cricketer who compiled this remarkable record of a the season. Bound in half morocco (worn).
