(x) South West Africa Stamps of South Africa Used in South West Africa These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued Military Mail 1914 (12 Dec.) envelope registered from Ludertiz to Wellington, New Zealand, marked "On Active Service" and bearing 2d. and 4d. sharing "army base p.o/south/africa/4" datestamp, showing large "R. No._______" alongside and framed bi-lingual "passed by censor/no. 4a", both in violet alongside, the reverse with two further strikes of the cancellation datestamp and arrival datestamp. An attractive registered franking to an unusual destination
