Collation: e 2 , A-C 2 , A-Q 2 , A-E 2 , F 4 ; 26 (of 27) volvelles (Without final blank and string pointers, first figure lacking one volvelle, a few figures without an outer tab, occasional light waterstaining.) Contemporary calf, spine decorated in gilt, sprinkled edges (minor scuffing, minor repairs). Provenance : engraved armorial of commune of Evran, Brittany, on title verso -- contemporary additions extending predictions to 1800 in one case and to 1824 in another, as in a few other copies. TRUE FIRST EDITION, 'EXCESSIVEMENT RARE'. The author describes himself as a Christian Arab and sets out a method of astrology he believes was used in ancient times and is now newly presented. The figures with their volvelles aid calculations and predictions; they give horoscopes for France, Islam, Spain and England, and one is devoted to King Henri IV of France. The present copy is paginated as Dorbon, except that it has 26, not 24 leaves in part III. Two other editions were printed, one also dated 1654-55 but without place or printer, and one in 1658, both expurgated and with several figures suppressed. The true first edition is further distinguished by its head ornament on the first two titles, by having in part II 57, not 64 leaves and 7, not one, figure. The work was condemned and burned in Rennes and Nantes, necessitating the changes. The third part is a conceit, written by the Capuchin Yves de Paris, instructed to examine the previous two (pseudonymous) parts for irregular thought. Cf. Thorndike, Hist. of Magic , VIII, 310.
