Geboren am 1. April 1933 in New York, verbrachte Flavin seine Kindheit in Queens. Er besuchte die High School und graduierte 1951. Er begann 1952 an der Columbia University zu studieren, wo er 1957 einen Abschluss in Kunstgeschichte erhielt. Nach dem College-Abschluss zog er nach New York und arbeitete als Lehrer an der Wadleigh High School. Während dieser Zeit begann er auch, seine eigene Malerei zu produzieren. Dan Flavin experimentierte mit verschiedenen Materialien und kombinierte sie mit Licht, was zu einzigartigen skulpturalen Werken führte. Nachdem er in den 1960er Jahren als Künstler anerkannt wurde, schuf er seine ersten monumentalen Installationen, darunter „Monument for V. Tatlin“ und „Monument for V. Tatlin“. 1964 stellte er in der Green Gallery in New York aus und erhielt seinen ersten großen internationalen Erfolg. Ab Mitte der 1960er Jahre wurden seine Werke in bedeutenden europäischen Galerien wie der Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris und der Galerie Heiner Friedrich in München gezeigt. In den 1970er Jahren erhielt Flavin zahlreiche Einladungen zu Ausstellungen und zu internationalen Kunstmessen. Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen auf der ganzen Welt aufgenommen. Er hatte Museumsausstellungen in vielen Ländern, darunter Deutschland, Frankreich, Japan, den USA, Großbritannien und Australien. Im Jahr 1983 erhielt Dan Flavin den renommierten Guggenheim-Preis für seine herausragenden Leistungen als Künstler. Im Jahr 1996 starb er in Riverhead, New York, im Alter von 63 Jahren.
