William Eggleston wurde am 23. Juli 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee, geboren. Er hat eine lange und erfolgreiche Karriere als Künstler hinter sich. Seine frühen Werke waren hauptsächlich Fotografien von Landschaften und Szenen aus dem täglichen Leben. Von 1950 bis 1961 besuchte er die Memphis Brooks Museum of Art und lernte dort Grundlagen der Fotografie. Im Alter von 22 Jahren begann er, seine ersten Fotografien zu machen. Er begann in seiner Heimatstadt Memphis, Tennessee, und reiste dann durch Südosten der USA. 1964 begann Eggleston sein Studium an der University of Mississippi. Er begann auch, seine eigene Fotografie-Ausstellungen zu organisieren. Seine erste Ausstellung „William Eggleston’s Guide“ wurde 1976 in der Museum of Modern Art in New York City ausgestellt und war ein großer Erfolg. 1978 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Buch „William Eggleston’s Guide“, das seine Arbeiten und sein künstlerisches Verständnis dokumentierte. 1984 erhielt Eggleston den Guggenheim-Fellowship-Preis, der ihm erlaubte, sich voll und ganz auf seine Fotografie zu konzentrieren. 1996 bekam Eggleston den Nationalen Medienkunstpreis. 2003 veröffentlichte er sein zweites Buch „The Democratic Forest“. Eggleston ist einer der wichtigsten Künstler der modernen Fotografie. Er wurde für seine einzigartige Sichtweise, seine Farbfotografie und seine Fähigkeit, das Unscheinbare in lebendige Bilder zu verwandeln, geschätzt. Seine Arbeiten sind in vielen Museen und Sammlungen der Welt ausgestellt. William Eggleston starb am 27. Mai 2018 im Alter von 78 Jahren.
