1937 BENTLEY 4¼ 'SPORTSMAN' TOURER COACHWORK BY DISKON & MOLYNEUX Registration No. Not UK registered. Chassis No. B 86 KT Engine No. E3BG Mustard yellow with brown leather upholstery. Engine; six cylinder push rod overhead valve, 4257cc, twin SU carburettors, 125bhp at 4500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: beam axles front and rear carried on semi-elliptic springs, with hydraulic shock absorbers front and rear with "Ride Control"; Brakes: rod and cable operated four wheel, with Rolls-Royce mechanical servo. Right hand drive. The Derby-built Bentley is, in effect, a sporting Rolls-Royce, retaining all the Rolls-Royce characteristics of smoothness, beautifully accurate controls, good ride and handling, powerful mechanical servo brakes and superb attention to detail in every aspect of the chassis construction. These cars are deceptively fast and powerful, and, given any sort of reasonable maintenance, are extremely long lived. Promoted by the Manufacturers as "The Silent Sports Car" there is no doubt that these Derby-built Bentleys are in every way worthy successors to the products of the original Bentley Company in standard of engineering, every aspect of road performance, and last, but not least, their impressive and attractive appearance. Chassis No. B86KT was delivered in England in June 1937 to Mr. George Byrne, fitted with a Park Ward Saloon body. In 1974 it was exported to Australia by well-known Sydney collector Frank Illich, who had the by now decrepit saloon body removed, and arranged for the old-established Sydney body builders Diskon and Molyneux to build an open sporting four seater body. This very elegant body, apparently the last body built by this firm, was based on a design by the famous Italian coach-builder Castagna. The published factory records show chassis B86KT as being originally fitted with engine number M8BY, however the car is now fitted with a slightly earlier 4¼ litre unit, number E3BG. It subsequently passed into the hands of the York Motor Museum in Western Australia who maintained it in sound condition and regularly exercised it. It is said to perform well and be pleasant to drive. In striking mustard yellow livery, the "boat-tailed" coachwork is decked in the popular style and the interior appointed with brown fabric upholstery, carpeting and trim. A compact hood, in black double duck, and frame, which store behind the rear seat, offer some weather protection and "safety first" aero screens are fitted for the rear passengers. Retaining a period style dashboard which is correctly equipped with Bentley instrumentation, other fitments include a bezel wound clock and the original jack and starting handle, the latter stamped DYK 337 which may refer to its original UK registration. The exterior presentation is enhanced by a scuttle mounted rear view mirror/sidelight, windscreen side panels etched with a Bentley "B", a Notek driving light in addition to the Lucas headlights and Butlers Atlantic sidelights, and a pair of short trumpet horns. Recently re-commissioned for the road with a new MoT and repatriated as an historic vehicle of British origin, the preferential import VAT rate of 2½ will apply to any successful EU buyer.
