1967 Ford Mustang Shelby 500 Fastback Lot Number 141 Registration OHN982E Chassis Number OHN982E Engine Number TBC Estimate £170,000 - £200,000 Print details Send this to a friend Carroll Shelby, the renegade Texan who built and sold the legendary 289 Cobra, had the idea to apply the Shelby touch to Ford's hot, new Mustang. It was a match made in heaven. Shelby took out the grille and put a pair of high-beam lights in the cavity, rear lights were replaced by rectangular units, and the air scoops were punched into the side coves, ahead of the rear wheels. The first Shelby Mustang - the GT350 - arrived in 1965 powered by a modified version of Ford's 289ci (4.7-litre) small-block V8 producing 306bhp. A four-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox was the stock transmission on early Shelby Mustangs, though a heavy-duty, three-speed automatic soon became available as an option. The running gear was appropriately up-rated to cope with the GT350's increased performance, incorporating the front disc brakes, stronger Ford Galaxie rear axle, Koni adjustable shock absorbers and alloy wheels. Outwardly there was little to distinguish Shelby's GT350 from the standard product apart from a pair of broad 'racing' stripes down the body centreline. On the open road there was, of course, no comparison. When the factory introduced a 390ci 'big-block' V8 option on the Mustang for 1967, Shelby went one better, installing Ford's 428ci (7.0-litre) Cobra Jet V8 to create the GT500, one of the great, iconic muscle cars of the 1960s. Produced initially at Shelby's Los Angeles facility and from 1968 at the Company's plant in Michigan, the Shelby Mustang continued to be based on the stock version, receiving the latter's styling changes and mechanical improvements while retaining its own distinctive special features, until production ended in 1970. This genuine Shelby GT 500 has been restored to a magnificent standard and as such presents in magnificent condition. The blue paintwork is blemish free, with uniform panel gaps and the interior has been re-trimmed to a superb standard. The car was imported into the UK in 1997 and Muscular Restorations in Milton Keynes have carried out extensive work on OHN982E with some significant invoices confirming the level of investment in this rare and interesting American muscle car. The 428cu inch engine is spotless and runs exceedingly well, the vendor and previous keepers have left no stone unturned in achieving a car finished to the highest standard. Supplied with V5C registration document and a superb history folder, viewing is highly recommended to fully appreciate the quality of this outstanding vehicle.
