A fine late 18th/early 19th-Century French armillary sphere
A fine late 18th/early 19th-Century French armillary sphere, unsigned but of Delamarche-pattern, the gilt-painted sunball at the centre attached via string and pulleys to the mounting for the 2.3cm. diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores with ungraduated equatorial and ecliptic and some cities named, held within a red-edge pasteboard circle with applied paper engraved MERIDIEN (x2) and Arctique , with moon disc on a wire arm, the sun ball surrounded by six red-edged concentric planet rings, each applied with engraved paper entitled ORBE DE.. and showing details of distance from the sun, size relative to the Earth, eccentric movement, ecliptic revolution angle and year length, held within two red-edged colure circles mounted to the ecliptic poles and showing several ETOILES FIXES , with a red-edged card ecliptic band applied with paper engraved with Zodiac and calendar scales, the former with sigils and detailed pictorial representations, and a broken line for the Orbite de la Lune , raised on an ebonised turned column plinth with circular foot -- 52.8cm. (20¾in.) high
