A GEORGE III RED-STAINED TORTOISESHELL AND ORMOLU-MOUNTED STRIKING AND MUSICAL EIGHT DAY TABLE CLOCK FOR THE TURKISH MARKET MARKWICK MARKHAM AND PERIGAL, LONDON. CIRCA 1790 CASE: elaborately mounted to all sides, with silk-backed frets to the cupola top, foliate-pierced side frets, all angles with grape-festooned scroll columns, brass-lined doors, upper mouldings and plinth, on four sets of double scroll feet DIAL: 4 3/8 in. (11.2 cm.) wide silver and polychrome enamel dial set with enamel chapter discs, the main disc with Turkish numerals and signed 'MARKWICK/MARKHAM/PERIGAL/LONDON', pierced ormolu hands, with discs above for chime/silent and four tune selection ('BENI SAIKIT/SABAC HAFIF/SAMAHE/USCHAE DEVIR'), subsidiaries with ormolu arrow hands MOVEMENT: six pillars, triple line fusees with verge escapement, hourly music on eight bells with fourteen hammers, hour strike on bell, trip repeat for music and hour strike, the back plate engraved with foliate scrolls around a cartouche signed 'MARKWICK/MARKHAM/PERIGAL/LONDON', secured to the case with bolts through the baseboard, formerly also with brackets; winding key, door key 17 in. (43 cm.) high; 10½ in. (26.5 cm.) wide; 8 in. (20 cm.) deep
