A LACQUER INCENSE CEREMONY SET ( KODOGU ) edo period (19th century) Contained within a rectangular cabinet fitted with shelves and drawers and accoutrements of the incense game, including a footed rectangular tray, two tapered-square incense burners ( koro ) lined in gilt-copper, a five-sided box fitted with a slot to receive game tallies, a three-tier box to contain mica plates for burning incense, a board applied with six mother-of-pearl chrysanthemum rosettes to support the mica plates, a variety of ivory game pieces, a set of wood game tallies in ten small slots, twelve to a slot, and a game board of red lacquer for the placement of the tallies, most of the other utensils for the game now missing; the set decorated in a matching pattern of chrysanthemums in gold and silver togidashi and hiramaki-e on a roiro ground, the interiors and bases nashiji , fittings silver cast as or chased with chrysanthemums--cabinet 10 3/8 x 4¼ x 9¼in. (26.8 x 10.8 x 23.6cm.)
