A LACQUER WRITING TABLE ( BUNDAI ) meiji period (late 19th century) The rectangular writing surface supported on four tapered legs and lavishly decorated in kinji, hiramaki-e , low-relief takamaki-e , red lacquer, gold foil and numerous accenting techniques including okibirame, uchikomi, kimpun and togidashi , the ground nashiji ; in the left foreground is a nobleman's cart and in the right pines, maples and other autumn foliage intersected by wide bands of mist leading back to rounded hills, the legs decorated on the outsides with further autumn grasses and edged in silver, the corner edges nashiji matching the underside of the writing surface, also fitted with silver mounts cast with scrolling foliage 25¾ x 15 x 5 1/8in. (65.5 x 38.1 x 13cm.)
