A LACQUER WRITING TABLE ( BUNDAI ) meiji period (late 19th century) Of characteristic rectangular shape set on four tapered legs, the writing surface designed in black, gold and silver togidashi , gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e , nashiji , keuchi, okibirame, uchikomi and roiro with motifs representing 'The Eight Views of Omi [Lake Biwa]' ( Omi hakkei ), including the pine tree at Karasaki, the returning sails at Yabase, and snow on Mount Hira, the rounded hills in the distance of gold and black togidashi , the hulls of two of the boats, the moorings and 'windows' of the tea hut on the shore of inlaid mother-of-pearl, the legs of the table patterned in gold togidashi with waves, their edges fundame and inner sides nashiji , the underside of the writing surface also nashiji and the mounts silver cast with chrysanthemums 23¾ x 13¼ x 4¼in. (60.3 x 33.4 x 11cm.)
