A LACQUER WRITING TABLE ( BUNDAI ) edo-meiji period (second half 19th century) Decorated on the writing surface in a variety of lacquer techniques in brilliant gold and silver and with metal and coral inlays on a gyobu ground, repeated on the outer sides of the four bracket feet, the surface designed with a scene of thatched farm buildings surrounded by trees, rice fields, a river and hills, the buds and blossoms of the magnolias and paulownias inlaid in silver and gilt-metal and the buds of the camellias inlaid in coral or gilt-metal, the contours of the ground suggested by silver and gold okibirame and nashiji and the water conduit beside the hut in the lower right and the tools near the huts on the left also inlaid gilt-metal, the bundles of rice hanging on a rack or on the ground to the left of gold takamaki-e and are replicated in relief on the silver fittings, the underside of the writing surface and inner faces of the legs nashiji , edges of the legs mounted in silver 25¼ x 14½ x 4¾in. (36.3 x 54 x 12cm.)
