A LARGE AND IMPOSING BLUE AND WHITE JAR AND COVERKangxi Period
Brilliantly painted in underglaze cobalt blue, the lotus lappets on the shoulders and foot accenting the pattern of the molded porcelain body, the jar with swelling shoulders and slightly flared foot decorated with panels of lush flowering plants alternating secluded landscapes, the rims decorated with a leafy garland, with a band of blossoming lotus and water plants at the short neck, the domed cover with a tiered 'lotus bud' knop similarly decorated, the underside pared clean showing the fine porcelain body.
23in (59cm) high overallFootnotes清康熙 青花大蓋罐
Another example of imposing size was sold at Christie's New York, 18 January 2018, New York, lot 6 and also decorated with rows of shaped petal-form panels enclosing vignettes and blossoming branches. However, most examples appear to be molded in three bands of molded lotus leaf panels, whereas our example, goes a step further in complexity, by the addition of two bands of smaller molded leaf lappets, that border the main bands, both above and below. The floral band at the neck is further enhanced by the encircling laurel-like borders that are also mirrored at the foot and the cover rim. The overall effect, with deep violet blue cobalt shimmering against the pure white backdrop; subtle molding of the panels themselves; and the detailed and finely drawn subjects, is one of the sublime achievements of Kangxi blue and white production.
