A Rare Cased Pair Of 32-Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistols By D. Egg, London, Early 19th CenturyWith rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrels each signed in gold along the top flat and with two gold lines behind the back-sight at the breech, gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved tangs each decorated with a martial trophy and foliage, signed border engraved case-hardened flat bevelled detented locks each decorated with a starburst behind the pan and with foliage at the stepped tail and across the safety-catch, foliate engraved cocks (expertly replaced including one retaining screw), and blued steel-springs each with roller, figured half-stocks each with chequered rounded butt, border engraved steel mounts retaining traces of original blueing, more so on one pistol and comprising butt-caps each decorated with a martial trophy and with a flower-head centred on the retaining screw, trigger-guards decorated en suite and each with applied spur, rear ramrod-pipes also forming the ramrod-entry and each decorated with a starburst, vacant silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, adjustable set trigger, and original horn-tipped ramrods, one with iron worm and the other with powder-measure: in an original expertly relined and refitted mahogany case with some accessories including brass-mounted three-way powder-flask covered in red leather and in fine condition, the interior of the lid with reproduction maker's trade label, the exterior of the lid with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks 25.2 cm. barrels FootnotesDurs Egg, son of Leonz Egg of Oberbuchsiten, Switzerland, was born in 1748 and, following a short stay in Paris, came to London and worked for John Twigg in 1772, he was granted denization in 1791 and is recognised as one of the greatest London gunmakers. He was gunmaker to George IV and the Duke Of York, and was granted various patents during the course of his long and distinguished career. Examples of his work are preserved in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, and many other public and private collections.
