Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Mounted onto silk brocade and framed in black-lacquered wood, the central image is neatly executed in tempera, ink and gilt on paper. Depicted is Bato, the horse-headed Kannon, Hayagriva in Sanskrit, who is one of the transformations of Kannon Bosatsu into the Six Deities of Mercy (Roku Kannon). Exactly like Hayagriva, she has a fierce expression, which is extremely rare for a Kannon shown on a Mandara (Mandala). Note the superb execution and detail applied to Bato Kannon’s two attendants, the four wrathful deities in the four medallions to each corner, and also the two Hiten (Apsara).
