(Asian Art | Live Online, 18th November 2020) A TIBETAN THANGKA OF PADMASAMBHAVA. A TIBETAN THANGKA OF PADMASAMBHAVA. Tibet, 19th Century or earlier. Tempera on canvas, seated cross-legged, draped in a long cloak, with a vajra in his right hand, the left holding a kapala and supporting a khatvanga, a club representing dominance over earthly temptations and the union of wisdom and compassion, his figure surrounded by a double aureola and images of his consorts, meditation deities and teachers, framed, 62 x 41.5cm. Provenance: Property from a Private English Collection, predominantly assembled in the 1970s and 1980s. 西藏十九世紀或更早 繪蓮花生大士像唐卡 來源:英國私人收藏,大部分藏品得於1970 - 80年間。 Padmasambhava, the 'Lotus-Born', also known as Guru Rinpoche as well as a manifestation of Buddha Amitabha was an Indian tantric Buddhist master who introduced Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, he is also the founder of the Nyingma school, the oldest of the four major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
