A VERY RARE EARLY WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF A RECUMBENT WATER BUFFALO SHANG DYNASTY, 12TH-11TH CENTURY BC The angular block carved with the simplified form of a recumbent water buffalo, the legs carved in flat relief and shown bent under the body, with a subtle raised backbone stretching from the relief-carved horns to the tail, the ears outlined in relief, while the mouth and hoofs are indicated by a linear outline, the white stone with worn and stained patina and some surface accretions 10¾ in. (27.4 cm.) long
