Dole promised a purse of $25,000 for first place and $10,000 to the runner-up; an ill-fated assortment of flight crews signed up to compete, resulting in false starts, crashes, several fatalities and losses at sea. Of eight crews who took off, only two arrived safely in Hawaii.
