BERRYMAN, CLIFFORD. 1869-1916. Autograph album featuring ink portraits of subjects by Berryman, each signed by the sitter, 54 leaves, oblong octavo (101 x 162 mm), Washington, DC, 1898-1916, a total of 52 ink portraits signed. Original limp calf, edges gilt, upper board with separation, lower board with vertical crease. Provenance: Alexander Scott (ownership inscriptions). Clifford Berryman began his career as a cartoonist for the Washington Post in 1891 before moving to the Washington Star in 1907. He is best remembered for a cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt with a bear cub that inspired the creation of the Teddy Bear. In this album, collected by Medal of Honor winner Alexander Scott (1844-1923), who was a chief in the Draughtsman's Division of the Patent Office, Berryman has added an ink portrait to each signature page. Signers include GROVER CLEVELAND (signature tipped in), M.A. HANNA, SANFORD DOLE, Hawaiian ministers L.A. THURSTON and FRANCIS M. HATCH; MAJOR GENERAL NELSON MILES; FITZHUGH LEE, ADMIRAL GEORGE DEWEY, Chinese Minister to the U.S. WY TING FANG; Secretary of State JOHN HAY; Secretary of War ELIHU ROOT; CLARA BARTON; and a whole host of Senators, Congressmen, and administration officials. The final portrait is of Berryman himself, with a charming poem stating that he included himself only at the wish of Alexander Scott the compiler of the album.
