AN INTERESTING, VERY FRIENDLY, CORREPSONDENCE TO A CLOSE FRIEND OF THE EMPEROR, the first opening 'Mon cher Stroganof' on hearing of his ill-health, with accompanying note from Golitsyn announcing the Grand-Duke's visit; the fifth letter dated by the recipient 1802 starts 'Mon cher ami' acknowledging 'la meilleure preuve de votre interet pour moi et de votre amour pour le bien public', with later mention to meetings of committees, some of those in pencil with transcription in ink, one dated by the recipient 3 January 1805 simply 'Oui mon cher ami A' in pencil; and a later letter received on 19 April 1817 'Ce n'est pas seulement les sentimens que vous m'y temoignez personellement et dont je sens certainement tout le prix, mais c'est encore de vous voir pénétré des ces vérités innumérables que nous apprend notre Religion'. Count Pavel Aleksandrovich Stroganov was a member of one of the richest families in Russia, highly educated and well travelled; after military training he commanded an infantry division during the Napoleonic wars, and sat on the privy council of the empire. Stroganov's interesting life as courtier, soldier and diplomat was recorded by Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich in Le Comte Paul Stroganoff published in Paris in 1905, which included correspondence with the emperor and others, but does not appear to include these letters.
