AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF AUGSBURG TORTOISESHELL-VENEERED SILVER-MOUNTED WHEEL-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS with plain barrels each with full-length central rib running down the tang, and a shorter rib on each side over the first third of each barrel, struck beneath the touch-hole with the Augsburg mark, flat bevelled locks sparsely engraved with flowers, sliding pan-covers, flush-fitting cocks engraved with animal-heads, wooden full stocks covered with panels of tortoiseshell and under-painted in orange (tortoiseshell damaged and incomplete), domed oval pommels en suite and encircled with a band engraved with a design of overlapping chevrons, trigger-guards each engraved with a flowerhead (one finial missing), turned ramrod-pipes, and wooden ramrods (fore-end caps and one ramrod tip missing, one ramrod replaced), unsigned, mid-17th Century 25¾in.
