QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARKS WITHIN DOUBLE SQUARES AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF IMPERIAL ENAMELLED YELLOW-GROUND VASES QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARKS WITHIN DOUBLE SQUARES AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795) Each vase of compressed lobed form surmounted by a short widely flaring neck and supported on a bell-shaped foot, superbly enamelled around the mid-section with twelve turquoise-ground shaped panels alternately containing descending kui dragons surrounding a central stylised shou character and full lotus blooms on leafy scrolling stems, each panel supported by the outstretched wings of a bat and set between stylised ruyi and lappet bands, the shoulder encircled by raised gilt metal lotus lappets below a further band of alternating lime-green and puce lotus flowerheads around the flaring neck, the cast lotus lappets repeated around the foot above a band of chrysanthemum scroll picked out in red, all reserved on a rich lemon-yellow ground, the blue enamelled mark reserved on a white base 9 in. (23 cm.) wide, box (2)
