An important and monumental French ormolu-, patinated bronze- and copper-mounted breche violette and Carrara marble mantelpiece The bas-reliefs by Louis Ardisson, the bronzes by Jules Allard, Late 19th Century The overmantel surmounted by a pair of winged putti bearing a monogrammed cartouche for Edward J. Berwind, above a copper egg-and-dart moulded architectural frame applied with trailing foliage, enclosing a bas-relief carved with Neptune, trumpeting Nereids astride hippocampi and garland-bearing putti, the lower surround with a moulded rectangular top above a central frieze carved with allegorical putti and recumbent hounds, flanked by a lion-pelt-draped male and female herm monopodiae, the cast-iron fireback raised with a coat-of-arms, with recessed rectanular hearth 180 in. (457.5 cm.) high; 91 in. (231 cm.) wide; 24¼ in. (61.5 cm.) deep; The opening: 38 x 45 in. (96.5 x 114.3 cm.)
