Anna Mary Robertson Moses (Grandma Moses American, 1860-1961 That a Fine Turkey, 1943 Signed Moses (lr); titled, dated Nov. 17 1943 and numbered 507 on a label affixed to the backing Oil on board 9 5/8 x 14 1/8 inches Kallir 305d Copyright reserved to Grandma Moses Properties Co., New York. The present work is thematically and chronologically related to another painting by the artist, Catching the Thanksgiving Turkey, 1943 (Collection The Metropolitan Museum of Art). Indeed, the subject of capturing the bird in preparation for the Thanksgiving feast was a subject that Grandma Moses addressed on a number of occasions. When asked to comment about forty of her favorite works for her first monograph, Grandma Moses American Primitive, she wrote: "Why do we think we must have turkey for thankgiven. Just becaus our Forefathers did, they had it becaus turkeys were plentyfull, and they did not have other kinds of meat, now we have abundance of other kinds of luxuries, Poor Turkey, He has but one life to give to his country," [Otto Kallir, Grandma Moses American Primitive, N.Y.: Dryden Press, 1946
Minor frame rubbing. 1/8'' of lower left corner (beneath frame) is missing. Surface grime. **UPDATE - Scattered very tiny paint flakes including in the legs of man at lower right corner; few flakes in the turkey and arm and face of central man; flake in ear of dog at lower left. Few few in woman at left center, some flakes in trees.
